RakuAruba

Elisabeth creates part of her ceramic art objects by using the old Japanese firing technique called Raku. This technique uses special glazing that is (partially) applied to ceramic art that has already been single baked.

The next step is baking the objects again in a special oven outdoors, where a gasburner serves as the heatsource. At around 1000oC (1832oF) the oven is opened and the objects removed with a special tool.

Because of the sudden change in temprature the objects' glaze layer starts to crackle. At this time the objects are put in a container with sawdust. This creates the Raku's signature black colours.
